Rollaway - Modern Epic EP Release Party w/ Special Guest Square

  • The ANZA Club 3 W. 8th Avenue Vancouver Canada (map)

After a number of years spent adventuring with side projects and developing new material, Rollaway is back with a hefty new EP of original roots rock, jazz fusion, and modern Americana. “Modern Epic” is four songs exploring new musical directions – longer forms, intricate harmonic structures, mixed meters, modulations, improvisatory sections – while preserving aspects of the band’s classic four-part harmonies and epic poetic themes like forsaken love, mortality, and salvation. To celebrate this release, we’re throwing down with Bomber Brewing and local post-rock quartet Square at the Anza Club on Friday May 24th.

To accompany the release, Bomber Brewmaster Blair Calibaba and Rollaway drummer/Bomber Tasting Room Assistant Manager Max Marceau Ley are creating a unique craft brew designed specially for the “Modern Epic” sound. Offered at the release party as well as at the brewery tasting room for a limited time, the beer and EP go hand in hand, with a purchase of the one offering discounts on the other.

Join us at the Anza Club on Friday May 24th to enjoy some great local music and local beer, all created in the thriving indie scene that is East Van. Tickets $15 at the door or in advance at eventbrite.ca

ABOUT ROLLAWAY
The music of Rollaway has been described as “floor-stomping blues”, “backwoods-choir elegance” (The Georgia Straight) and “dirty-southern-gothic-rock-country-folk” (Discorder Magazine). Since founding the project in Atlanta, GA, Rollaway’s bandleader and songwriter Benton Roark has led the project across North America for over a decade (now Vancouver-based), releasing no fewer than four records and forging a sound that weds arcane poetry with roots rock, jazz fusion, and modern Americana.

The latest record featuring Roark’s work with members of Rollaway - 2016’s Deep in the Pocket, Still No Change - has been featured on CBC’s North by Northwest and was named CD of the Week by The Vancouver Sun, which described it as “heartfelt”, “magisterial”, and possessing “a relaxed funkiness”. Prior to that, Rollaway released The Return of the Lonesome Coyote Patchwork Pulpit, and Sundry Other Tales from the Rainbow’s End, garnering critical acclaim and inviting comparisons to classic acts like Dylan, Steely Dan, and The Band as well as younger ones like Fleet Foxes and Neko Case. Britain's Maverick Magazine called the tunes “tone poems in the style of My Morning Jacket,” whereas Vancouver's Georgia Straight wrote “if he keeps making records as good as this one, Roark is welcome to stay here as long as he likes.”

Rollaway is: Benton Roark (rhythm guitar, vocals), Adam Tryczynski (lead guitar, vocals), Jen Lewin (keyboards, vocals), Sarah Wolfman-Robichaud (vocals, percussion), Michael Vaughan (bass), and Max Marceau Ley (drums).

ABOUT SQUARE
Square is a modern-day band based in Vancouver that epitomizes the ethos of the Canadian middle-aged experience. Multicultural, overeducated, and ironically trying to justify art-making in our current (dis)information age. Square's music asks a unique question: what happens when you know all the rules and somehow still get lost? The answer to this question is laid out in songs that are powerful, complex, and uniquely wrought out, resulting not as an experiment of their combined musical lives but as a staunch statement of musical mastery. This fast-rising post-rock band is comprised of Nathan Dillon (bass/vocals), James Maxwell (drums), Alfredo Santa Ana (guitar), and Edward Top (guitar/violin/vocals).
